Hoyt was born in rural Alabama where he grew up taking after school poker lessons from his father. His father taught him his "no fear" style of playing. His aggressive playing style and ability to read opponents makes him one of the best players in the world. Hoyt has parlayed his knowledge into a World Series of Poker championship in 1992 (in Pot Limit Omaha), and a million dollar win in the World Poker Tour Event at Foxwoods in 2003. He was given the "Mr. All-In" nickname by Phil Hellmuth, Jr for his tendency to push all his chips in. He is also known as the "Westworld Cowboy".
