$10,000 Main Event: Small Flop Bet Sinks Brunson

Stu Ungar   Doyle Brunson
Five of Spades Four of Spades VS Ace of Hearts Seven of Spades
The Flop The Turn The River
Ace of Diamonds Seven of Diamonds Two of Clubs Three of Hearts Two of Diamonds

The Result

Doyle and Stu have been battling heads-up and at this point of the final hand their chip stacks were almost even. Brunson was holding the AHearts7Spades and Stu had the 5Spades4Spades. Doyle acted first and he came in with a raise, and Ungar proceeded to call Doyle's bet and that created a pot of $17,000. The flop came with the ADiamonds7Diamonds2Clubs, which gave Ungar a Gut-Shot straight draw and the "Texas Dolly" had the top two pair. The first to make a move was Ungar and he checked, Doyle made a pot-sized bet of approximately $17,000, and then Ungar made the call. The turn came and it brought the 3Hearts, which was huge for Ungar as it gave him a 5-high straight and the nut hand. Ungar decided to bet $30,000 and then came Brunson's all-in decision. The river turned up the 2Diamonds and Stu Ungar is the last man standing and he claims his first main event title.

analysis

Brunson felt that his bet of $17,000 on the flop was just not enough. Usually under those circumstances the "Texas Dolly" would have bet more aggressively in order to scare off his opponent, but this time he tried to trap Ungar. Doyle believes he made a mistake by moving his chips all-in on the turn.
