Texas Holdem No-Limit WSOP 1987

$10,000 Main Event: Another overbet

Johnny Chan   Bob Ciaffone
King of Hearts Queen of Hearts VS Ace of Diamonds Four of Diamonds
The Flop The Turn The River
King of Clubs Jack of Hearts Four of Clubs

The Result

In this hand there were three players still remaining (Johnny Chan, Bob Ciaffone, and Frank Henderson) and the blinds were set at $10,000-$20,000 with a $2,000 ante. Here is where the three player's chips stacks were at: Ciaffone had $665,000, Chan had $525,000 and Henderson had $250,000. Johnny was holding onto the KHeartsQHearts and he limped in on the button, Ciaffone was holding the ADiamonds4Diamonds and he came in with a raise of $85,000. Johnny stepped up and called while Henderson who had limped in from the small blind folded. The flop arrived and it was the KClubsJHearts4Clubs which left Chan with the top pair and Ciaffone had the bottom pair with an overcard. Ciaffone was first to act and he made a move to bet $185,000 and Johnny decided to move all-in for a $240,000 raise. Now the pressure was to Ciaffone and he was pondering his decision for a while and he eventually decided to call. Johnny Chan's pair of King's would hold up in this battle.

analysis

Ciaffone felt his decision to raise pre-flop and to call the flop were reasonable decisions. However, his bet on the flop was a mistake. Also worth noting is he over-bet the pot on both his pre-flop bet and on the flop. These bets made the pot so large and that's what led to him calling the all-in bet. He figured he had 5 outs and that's why he decided to call. He believed had he won this pot he would have been the big favorite to go and win the tourney.
