Legendary Poker Hands

Texas Holdem No-Limit WSOP 1988

$10,000 Main Event: Holy Flop Nuts

Johnny Chan   Erik Seidel
Jack of Clubs Nine of Clubs VS Queen of Clubs Seven of Hearts
The Flop The Turn The River
Queen of Spades Ten of Hearts Eight of Diamonds Two of Spades Six of Diamonds

The Result

The movie "Rounders" had this hand featured in it. Johnny Chan was holding the JClubs9Clubs and Erik Seidel had the QClubs7Hearts. The players both limped in and waited for the flop. The flop showed QSpades10Hearts8Diamonds, which gave Johnny the nut straight and Seidel has the top pair. Johnny decided to throw in a $40,000 bet and Seidel raised him $50,000 and the "Orient Express" smooth-called. The turn shows up the 2Spades, which did nothing to either player's hand. First to act was Johnny and he checked and then it was to Seidel who moved all-in. Chan immediately called, and Seidel knew right away that he was drawing dead with only one card remaining. The final card was turned over and it was the 6Diamonds making Johnny Chan the champion of the 1988 World Series of Poker.

analysis

Chan had Seidel trapped into believing that he held the best hand or that Johnny was weak. It was a great set-up by Johnny and that's why he's a Champion.
