The Result

The final hand of the 89 WSOP had Phil Hellmuth holding pocket nines and the "Orient Express" had the ASpades7Spades. Phil Hellmuth began the action by making a $35,000 raise and Johnny Chan re-raised with a bet of $165,000. Phil then decided to move all-in with a $1 million bet. This left Johnny to do some thinking and in the end he put his remaining $450,000 into the pot. The flop came KClubs10HeartsKDiamonds, which delivered Phil two pair and the "Orient Express" had five outs to finish off his draw. The turn came and it was the QSpades, which gave Chan an additional seven outs. Next up was the river card and it was the 6Spades making Phil Hellmuth the champion of the 1989 World Series of Poker.

analysis

Chan possibly did make a mistake when he called Hellmuth's all-in bet, although he wasn't in really bad position. With Chan being the more experienced player and winning the last two WSOP's he might have been better suited to save his chips and outplay Phil in later hands.
