Legendary Poker Hands

Texas Holdem No-Limit WSOP 1997

$10,000 Main Event: Slow Play Away

Stu Ungar   Mel Judah
Queen of Diamonds Jack of Clubs VS Ten of Hearts Nine of Clubs
The Flop The Turn The River
Jack of Hearts Three of Hearts Ten of Diamonds Two of Clubs King of Clubs

The Result

When this hand unfolded there were three players remaining at the final table (Ungar, Judah, and John Strzemp). Mel Judah was on the button, he was holding the 10Hearts9Clubs and with that he decided to raise $60,000. Stuey was the small blind and he called with the QDiamondsJClubs and John Strzemp was in the big blind and he folded. The flop brought the JHearts3Hearts10Diamonds, this gave Ungar the top pair and Judah had the bottom pair. Both players checked. The turn was next and the 2Clubs came up which did not help either player. Stu was first to act and he bet $80,000 into the pot. Judah then called Ungar's bet and raised an additional $162,000 which had him move all-in. Ungar called the raise after thinking for a while. The two flipped up their cards and Judah knew he was the underdog. The river was next and the KClubs appeared and Judah was now finished and Ungar will now play heads-up with John Strzemp. Ungar would eventually eliminate Strzemp to become World Champ.

analysis

Ungar's check on the flop made Judah think he was either drawing or bluffing with his bet on the turn. This play is what made Judah move in on the turn. Ungar who had a nice stack of chips knew that he had set Judah up to move in on the turn. If Judah had of bet on the flop he probably would have been able to escape the hand without losing his whole stack.
