Texas Holdem No-Limit WSOP 1997

Stu Ungar   John Strzemp
Ace of Hearts Four of Clubs VS Ace of Spades Eight of Clubs
The Flop The Turn The River
Ace of Clubs Five of Diamonds Three of Hearts Three of Diamonds Two of Spades

The Result

Stu Ungar was the first to act in this final hand of the 97 WSOP. Ungar was holding the AHearts4Clubs and he raised $40,000. Strzemp had the Aspades8Clubs and he called. The players waited for the flop and it came AClubs5Diamonds3Hearts, which produced top pair for both players. Strzemp had the higher kicker, but Stu had a gut-shot straight draw along with his pair. Strzemp was first to act and he bet $120,000. Stu pondered for a while before he would eventually move all-in. Strzemp took no time to call the all-in. The turn brought the 3Diamonds which gave Stu 7 outs to win and 20 outs to split the pot. The river fell and it was the 2Spades, which gave Ungar a 5 high straight and the Championship.

analysis

When Ungar decided to go all-in he was thinking Strzemp might have a better ace, but it wasn't the big slick or a real high hand since he did not raise before the flop. Ungar really did not risk too much at this point since he had a 4 to1 chip lead going into this hand. So, if he did lose the hand they would have been even in chips. Strzemp was unlucky as Ungar outdrew him. Stu Ungar played tremendous poker throughout this event.
