$10,000 Main Event: McBride Caught Trying the Play the Board

Scotty Nguyen   Kevin McBride
Jack of Diamonds Nine of Clubs VS Queen of Hearts Ten of Hearts
The Flop The Turn The River
Eight of Clubs Nine of Diamonds Nine of Hearts Eight of Hearts Eight of Spades

The Result

Kevin McBride was first to act, he had the QHearts10Hearts and he decided to raise $50,000. Scotty Nguyen had the JDiamonds9Clubs and he decided to call. The flop appeared and it was the 8Clubs9Diamonds9Hearts which gave Nguyen a set and McBride had a gut-shot straight draw and two overcards. Scotty was first to act and he checked the action to McBride. McBride bet $100,000 on a semi-bluff. Scotty took his time and eventually he called. The boys waited anxiously for the turn and it came with the 8Hearts. This gave McBride a straight flush draw and Scotty was now sitting on a full house. Scotty was first to act and he checked again and McBride decided to make a $100,000 bet. Scotty called and waited for the river card. The 8Spades came on the river, which made a full house on the board. Scotty decided to bet out $310,000 which if he called would put McBride all-in. At the table, Scotty told McBride while he was making his decision to call or not, "You call, gonna be all over baby". McBride answered Scotty with this, "I call. I play the board". Scotty was right it was all over baby, making Scotty Nguyen the 98 World Champion of Poker.

analysis

Scotty Nguyen made two check-calls (one on the flop and turn), which at that time McBride should have realized that Scotty had either an 8 or a 9. Scotty made a great bet on the river as it made McBride think he was bluffing. McBride's call in hopes of splitting the pot was not a wise decision.
