Texas Holdem No-Limit WSOP 2001

$10,000 Main Event: Hellmuth Gets too Aggressive

Phil Hellmuth   Carlos Mortensen
Queen of Clubs Ten of Hearts VS Queen of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds
The Flop The Turn The River
Queen of Spades Nine of Diamonds Four of Spades Jack of Hearts Ace of Spades

The Result

When this hand took place there were still five players remaining at the final table. The blinds were set at $15,000-$30,000 with an ante of $6,000. Hellmuth limped into the pot, Phil Gordon was on the button and he limped in, Carlos was next in the small blind and he limped in, and Stan Schrier checked at the big blind. The flop provided QSpades9Diamonds4Spades. Carlos was first to act and he checked, Schrier followed suit and checked, Hellmuth decided to bet $60,000, and Phil Gordon folded. Carlos decided to raise $200,000, Schrier then folded. The pot has a total of $410,000 in it and now it was time for Phil Hellmuth to make a move. He moved all-in with his $900,000, Mortensen proceeded to call and both players turned their cards up. Phil had a Q-10, and Carlos was holding a Q-J, which gave both players top pair but Carlos had the higher kicker. A Jack hit on the turn, which gave Carlos the top two pair and Hellmuth had an open-ended straight draw. Phil now needed an 8 or a K to arrive on the river to make a straight. The river came and it was the ASpades and Phil Hellmuth was sent packing.

analysis

Phil's first bet was a good bet as he did not leave himself in a position to be pot committed, so if need be he could get out of the hand. The only way that Phil could have won the hand when he moved all-in was to beat a bluff or get Carlos to lay down the better hand. It was unlikely that Phil's hand was the best after Carlos check-raised him, and that is when Phil should have gotten out.
