Legendary Poker Hands

Texas Holdem No-Limit WSOP 2001

$10,000 Main Event: Pocket Rockets No Help to Tomko

Carlos Mortensen   Dewey Tomko
King of Clubs Queen of Clubs VS Ace of Spades Ace of Hearts
The Flop The Turn The River
Jack of Diamonds Ten of Clubs Three of Clubs Three of Diamonds Nine of Diamonds

The Result

Carlos Mortensen is holding the KClubsQClubs and he decides to raise to $100,000. Dewey Tomko has pocket aces (ASpadesAHearts) and he flat calls in an attempt to trap Carlos. The flop was next and it produced the JDiamonds10Clubs3Clubs, which gave Carlos two overcards, the nut-straight draw and a King high flush draw. With that in mind Carlos decided to bet out $100,000, Tomko proceeded to raise $400,000. Carlos decided he was going all-in on a semi-bluff and Dewey Tomko decided to call. Carlos had 13 outs in total. The turn card produced the 3Diamonds which didn't help either player, but the river came up and it was the 9Diamonds which gave Carlos the Nut-straight. Carlos Mortensen won the title and the first prize money of $1.5 million.

analysis

Both players flat out played this hand well. When the flop came and Mortensen bet out it was pretty much from that point on these players were trapped into playing their hands for all of their chips.
