The Result

In the final hand of the 2002 WSOP, Varkonyi was holding the QDiamonds10Spades and he decided to raise $90,000. Julian Gardner decided to call Varkonyi's raise with the JClubs8Clubs. The flop brought the QClubs4Clubs4Spades, which gave Gardner a flush draw and Varkonyi was holding onto top pair. Gardner being first to act decided to check and Varkonyi bet a small amount of $50,000. Gardner who had the flush draw decided to move all-in with $765,000 on a semi-bluff. Varkonyi decided to call. The river card came and it was the 10Clubs, which gave Gardner the flush, but it gave Varkonyi the full house and the championship.

analysis

Gardner tried to pull one by Varkonyi when the board didn't look to frightening and he had enough chips to make a nice raise. He knew that if Varkonyi did call he had 9 outs to try and draw out. Varkonyi made a smart call and he eventually won.
