The Result

The scene was set for the final hand of the 2004 WSOP. Greg Raymer at this time had a chip stack valued at $17,125,000 and David Williams had a stack worth $8,240,000. The blinds for this hand were set at $50,000-$100,000. David Williams was holding AHearts4Spades and he decided to raise from the button to $300,000, and Greg Raymer was the big blind and he was holding the 8Spades8Diamonds and he decided to call Williams bet. The two waited for the flop and it came 4Diamonds2Diamonds5Spades. Greg was first to act and he checked and David Williams instantly bet $500,000. Greg was making his decision and he made a strong play by raising to $1,600,000. Again David quickly called the raise. Next was the turn and it brought the 2Hearts. Greg was first to act and he bet $2,500,000 and like clockwork Williams called. The river came and it was the 2Clubs, which presented both players with a full house. Greg Raymer waited about a second before he moved all-in. Williams took a couple of seconds before he called and flipped his hand face-up first and Raymer took a glance before he flipped up the Championship hand. Then Raymer raised both hands in the air and celebrated his monumental victory.

analysis

Before the flop both Williams and Raymer played their hands the way they should be played. A smart play by Raymer was his check-raise after he hit a nice flop. Williams who had the gut-shot draw and a middle pair with top kicker also bet correctly. The only problem was when Williams got check-raised he should have either moved all-in or folded; instead of calling his short stack.
